Table with beige fabric, scissors, pink thread spool, and keys. Urban-themed background. Soft lighting, calm setting.

My daughter, Diane, found a picture of a patchwork quilt and loved it, many years ago. The feature of the quilt consists of twelve crocheted squares, twelve inches square. Diane did not crochet but I did and so I made the squares for her.

The twelve squares were stacked and wrapped in a tea towel and lay in a cupboard, only recently discovered after years of laying in the cupboard when Diane and I were sorting through a cupboard.  The picture and directions were long since lost.

Diane, too, had lost the vison to make it.  I looked at all the work that I had invested in those crocheted squares and decided I would make the quilt.

THE QUILT WAS REDESIGNED

I bought two double bed sheets, adding several meters of gauzy curtain material, and yards of daisy lace.

MY QUILTING JOURNEY BEGAN

Nola

A renowned quilter, Nola, came to my aid. With help and advice.

The quilt began to take shape. I stitched the squares onto the curtaining; the daisy lace outlines the squares. Step two: The curtaining is added to sheet one and laid over the wadding. I placed the three layers over sheet two. I clamped all four layers to the table making sure there were no wrinkles, and with the help of my mentor Nola, and a friend, we tacked the layers securely together.

I then begin the quilting using tiny stitching following lines that I drew to form a diamond pattern around the squares. To hold the squares firm, I stitch again with minute stitching. The stitching is slow and painstaking. I shall be a long time before the quilt is on my bed.

Quilting

Diamonds are formed under pressure; their beauty is purified in the heat of a volcano. My quilt is being made under pressure, and I hope the heat of making tiny stitches produces a beautiful quilt.  I am reminded how God said I was his workmanship, and he would stay with me until he had formed in me the beauty of his son Jesus and I was his perfect creation. I feel grateful that God has loved me enough to keep on working on me to be the best I can be.
